Preparing for your sitter’s arrival is an important aspect of the house sitting experience. Having spent time getting to know your sitter they will be arriving at your home as a friend, and will appreciate a warm welcome.
Make arrangements in advance of your departure
After you’ve chosen your sitter and they have accepted your offer, review all of the information sent to your sitter and ensure they fully grasp the responsibilities you plan to hand over. Outline how far in advance of your departure you would like them to arrive, and confirm their travel plans; some owners like to invite sitters the night before to enjoy dinner and introduce them to the pets.
If you have pets, stock up on everything they will need for the duration of the sit, this should include food, medications, and supplements. Alternatively you can leave sufficient funds and instructions (plus transport if required) for your sitter, to enable them to purchase items for your pet during their stay.
Tell your vet that you are going away and have a trusted house sitter coming to stay. Arrange for any emergency medical care to be invoiced to you on your return, or come to an agreement with your sitter for reimbursement. Your sitter will also have 24/7 access to our dedicated Vet Line.
Prepare your home for your house sitter’s arrival.
Present your home to your sitter as you would like to see it on your return, a clean, tidy and welcoming environment will be so appreciated. Arrange a meet and greet with the neighbours if possible, this is always a good ice breaker and many friendships often blossom this way.
Allocate a bedroom and make space for the sitter to store the clothes and belongings they bring with them. They may arrive with a suitcase but would probably appreciate not having to live out of one. Space in the bathroom to store their toiletries is another way you can make them feel comfortable and at home. A few basic essentials in the fridge are a thoughtful addition.
Welcome your sitter and spend time running through the responsibilities you will hand over. Then enjoy your time away safe in the knowledge that your chosen sitter is taking care of everything back home.
Travel with peace of mind
After the sit is complete you can leave a review on your house sitter’s profile which will be visible to all TrustedHousesitters members and will serve to assist other owners considering inviting this sitter into their home. We encourage our members to leave fair, balanced, and factual reviews. You can also request feedback from your sitter to show future applicants what a great host you’ve been.
Next time you plan a trip, log into your dashboard and simply add new dates to reactivate your listing. You’ll soon receive applications from registered sitters interested in the opportunity to step into your shoes and make new connections with animal lovers all over the world!
